About the actual aircraft The Mercury project is the American manned space flight program implemented from 1959 to 1963. The capsule on which the astronauts board was a small one-seater, and the rocket used for the launch was a modified version of the intercontinental ballistic missile deployed by the military at that time. Two types of rockets, Redstone and Atlas, were developed, and after 20 experimental flights, the first manned space flight was successful in May 1961. The Redstone rocket was used for this first launch and the second launch in July. Atlas rockets were used four times, from the third launch in February 1962 to the sixth launch in May 1988, the final of the Mercury project. The Atlas rocket was developed based on the intercontinental ballistic missile Atlas missile deployed by the US Air Force since 1959.
